Design Criteria: Design Summary

Orthodontics is by nature an esthetic discipline, and in our office design, we have achieved a clean, contemporary, and esthetically pleasing atmosphere. We value the most current radiographic technology, orthodontic appliances, and practice management software in our patient care. Half of our reception room chairs are located in treatment rooms because we encourage parents and family to sit with patients in the treatment rooms and be a part of treatment. Most importantly, we love people – we want them to feel comfortable, cared for, and welcome from the very first time they hear about Genesis Orthodontics.

Design Criteria: Dental Technology

We transitioned to a paperless charting system, installing 14 Apple iMacs and topsOrtho™ practice management software. Dual monitors with Apple Thunderbolt display in treatment rooms for staff and patients enhance educational opportunities. An Apple iPad with Square payment processing is efficient and sleek. We also have Wi-fi throughout the office for our patient use and enjoyment.

Design Criteria: Dental Equipment

Sirona Panoramic and Cephalometric X-Ray machine greatly increases diagnostic accuracy. Our efficient sterilization area includes a recessed (for noise control) SweepZone® Ultrasonic Cleaner and two autoclaves as well as a custom designed area for decontamination and lubrication of instruments and dental handpieces. A Soft Tissue Laser is used for patient convenience and comfort in some clinical applications. Reupholstered and new Dexta patient chairs and doctor/assistant stools enhance patient comfort and doctor/assistant ergonomics. A central vacuum system in all treatment rooms and orthodontic lab enables efficient cleaning. We have implemented an extensive and fully equipped orthodontic lab that includes a Great Lakes Biostar®, an industrial Fume Hood manufactured by Handler, a lathe for finishing appliances, a Great Lakes 12” Model Trimmer, and an appliance soldering unit.

Design Criteria: Ergonomics

This office is designed for a left-handed and a right-handed doctor, with extra space at the head of the patient chairs for custom-made and branded dental carts (by Forest Dental) to easily move to accommodate both assistants and doctors on either side at a moments notice. These carts also house an armamentarium of orthodontic pliers and supplies. Reupholstered and new Dexta patient chairs and doctor/assistant stools enhance patient comfort and doctor/assistant ergonomics.

Design Criteria: Aesthetics

The office is located on the corner of a major intersection, with large windows in each treatment room offering scenic views of the city and surrounding area. Contemporary design elements offer a clean look and feel. The floor-to-ceiling windows provide natural light and warmth to the whites of the interior. A 40-inch diameter illuminated globe serves as the centerpiece of the reception room, complementing the idea of Genesis and “creating” a new smile and new life. Large staff lounge with 60-inch TV and large quartz conference table was designed to accommodate lunch-and-learns with other dental offices.

Design Advice: Dental Technology

Hire a dental architect! This was the best money we spent. Their expertise is invaluable – from creating efficiency and flow in the office design and enhancing communication with building contractors to specs such as outlet placement and design of square shaped trash deposit holes instead of round holes (efficiency in cleaning plaster from a spatula, for example). This is your business, so determine early on what you want to ethically and morally portray, and let your design follow that passion.
